Spring, roughly April to June, is when Lake Como is at its most romantic. The villa gardens reopen and fill with colour — the azaleas and rhododendrons of Villa Carlotta are a spring set-piece — the weather is mild, and the crowds haven't yet reached the summer crush. The villas are open, the ferries are ramping back up, and the lake looks freshly green. For garden-lovers and for a gentler, prettier day from Milan, spring is the pick.
Summer: busy and full
July and August bring the fullest ferry timetable and the longest opening hours, but also the biggest crowds and the most heat. The lake is stunning, but Bellagio and Varenna throng at midday and the lanes can feel packed. If summer is when you travel, come early, lean on the cruise for cool and calm, and accept that you'll share the towns. It's peak Como in every sense — glorious and busy in equal measure.
Autumn: warmth without the crush
Early autumn is the lake's second sweet spot. September holds onto summer's warmth while the crowds thin noticeably, and October brings softer light and quieter towns, with the gardens still open into the month before they close for winter. Ferries stay reasonably frequent. For a calmer, cooler day with the villas still walkable, an early-autumn visit is hard to beat — arguably the connoisseur's choice.
Winter: calm and closed gardens
From November to March the lake goes quiet: many villas and gardens close, the ferry timetable thins, and some day tours drop Varenna or run a reduced winter route. The upside is atmosphere and space — misty mountains, empty lanes, and the lake's grand shape without the summer throng. But you'll see the setting more than the gardens, so come in winter for the calm and the views, and save the villa terraces for the warmer months.
